Garage doors contain a roller rod system. This system holds your door onto its tracks so that it opens and closes smoothly.
However, rollers have to put up with a lot of wear and tear. You use them every time you use your garage door. Over time, they can get damaged and affect the way your door works. At this point, they might need a repair or replacement.
What are the signs of roller damage?
Your Garage Door Vibrates
When garage door rollers are in the right shape, they help their door open smoothly. They give the door a tight connection with its rails.
If you have a problem with one or more rollers, then your door can't run smoothly on its tracks. If its connection is too loose, it will vibrate as it moves up or down.
These vibrations can be caused by general wear. A cracked, chipped, or broken roller can also make a door shake.
Your Garage Door Is Noisier Than Usual
No garage door is completely silent. However, an increase or change in operating noise can be a sign of a roller problem. For example, faulty rollers can make a door grind, squeak, or squeal when it opens or closes.
Damaged or broken rollers will make a door noisier. If the rollers need lubrication, then the door might squeak or squeal. Metal rollers also make grinding noises if they have rusted; you might hear a scraping sound if a roller has completely stuck to its track.
Your Garage Door Doesn't Open or Close Normally
If rollers don't hold a door on its tracks, then it won't open evenly. One side of the door might open or close at a faster rate than the other. This side will be higher or lower, and your door will look crooked when you open or close it.
Sometimes, a door can open at the same rate on both sides; however, it doesn't open smoothly. When the door comes into contact with a damaged roller, it will jump or jerk out of its tracks.
In some cases, a broken or loose roller makes a door jam. If parts of the roller sit in the track, then they block the door from moving. So, it might start to open or close but then get stuck. In some cases, the door stays stuck, and you won't be able to reverse it back to its original position.
